President John Evans Atta Mills has expressed shock at the recent devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit the North-Eastern part of Japan on 11th March, 2011.
In a letter to the Emperor of Japan, President Mills said Ghanaians “are very much saddened by this dreadful disaster and the resultant heavy toll on human lives as well as the destruction of property and infrastructure in the communities affected.”
“I wish, therefore, to convey on behalf of the Government and the People of Ghana and on my own behalf, our deepest sympathies to Your Majesty, the Government and the People of Japan and especially to the residents of the North-Eastern part of your country. Our prayers and thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by the sudden misfortune,” he added.
The BBC reported last Friday that Japan's most powerful earthquake struck the north-east coast, triggering a massive tsunami in the process.
The report said cars, ships and buildings were swept away by a wall of water after the 8.9-magnitude earthquake, which struck about 400km (250 miles) north-east of Tokyo.
The latest official death toll stands at about 2,400 - but some estimates suggest 10,000 may have been killed.
