A 27-Year-old barber who was being interrogated by the police but attempted to escape from lawful custody has been sentenced to four years imprisonment in hard labour by an Accra circuit court.
Dila Garbrah, the barber who was arrested by soldiers for having sex with a minor at the beach decided to pull a fast one on the police while the officials at the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) were cautioning him on the incident. Luck however eluded him and he was reÂarrested.
At the court presided over by Mrs. Patience Mills Tetteh, the accused pleaded guilty to the offence, explaining that because it was his first encounter with the police, he was afraid and therefore decided to run away.
Garbrah would probably be charged with defilement if investigation in the substantive matter is completed.
ASP Sarah Acquah, who presented the facts, stated that the accused person lives at Nima, a suburb of Accra.
According to her, on August 24, 2010, the accused was arrested at the beach having sex with a little girl and handed over to DOVVSU for interrogations.
She said while the accused was being questioned yesterday, he suddenly jumped through a window onto the first floor of the building and then jumped down to the ground, floor and took to his heels. However, before he could go any further, the police gave him a hot chase and he was eventually apprehended.
In a related development, a soldier has been hauled before the same court for allegedly kidnapping a 15-year-old girl for days, during which period he sexually abused her.
The soldier, Corporal Sampson Narh, is said to have invited the victim, a pure water seller, into his room and locked her up. Although her parents combed everywhere for her, they did not find her until they had information that the victim was with the accused which led to his arrest.
Sampson has pleaded not guilty to offences or abduction and defilement and is currcntly in police custody.
ASP Sarah Acquah, the prosecutor, informed the court that the complainant is the victim's mother and they live together at Teshie Tsuibleoo, She indicated that the victim completed Junior High School in 2008 but could not continue because of financial problems.
Due to the problem, her parents asked her to sell pure water to mobilize some funds for her education.
The prosecutor said in May this year, the victim went to Teshie Barracks to purchase a bag of sachet water. Whiles waiting for the seller, the accused allegedly called the victim into his room and kept her for four days, the victim's mother had information that her daughter was with him and reported the matter to the police.
The accused person allegedly admitted to the offences after which he was put before court.
