The UK-Ireland branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has called for the immediate resignation of the National Security Co-ordinator, Lt. Col. Larry Gbevlo-Lartey.
“As the National Security Co-ordinator, he has the responsibility of ensuring the protection of all Ghanaians; but it is very clear that Gbevlo-Lartey is only in office to protect the interests of the NDC government to the detriment of Ghanaians”.
Addressing a press conference on Saturday at Archway, London, Hayford Atta-Kruffi, NPP UK –Ireland chairman, questioned the rationale behind the appointment of the National Security Co-ordinator as a member of the NDC’s political committee.
He observed that under Gbevlo-Lartey, “officers at the National Security have been reduced to debt collectors, bodyguards of the rich, famous and politicians, nightclub escorts and also usurping the powers and duties of the police by seeking to exert their influence in the daily lives of innocent Ghanaians”.
The nation’s security was under threat due to the discriminative manner in which the head conducted his duties, he added.
“It is for these reasons among others that the NPP UK-Ireland is asking Gbevlo-Lartey to resign and go ahead to pursue his political agenda. This is in the best interest of the state,” he contended.
The party also called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Paul Tawiah Quaye, to institute an immediate investigation into the conduct of Rose Atenga-Bio, Greater Accra Police Regional Commander.
The NPP UK-Ireland said they had lost trust in the Accra Police boss due to the bias she showed in dealing with the Konkomba Market clashes, the arrest of Nana Darkwa and the arrest of Victor Newman.
In Nana Darkwa’s case, it baffled the party that when the police went to Top Radio to effect his arrest, they by-passed irate NDC thugs who were holding weapons and threatening to kill, and rather arrested someone who had no arms.
The situation in the country was gradually turning into ‘the survival of the fittest’ affair, as the police and the National Security looked on while NDC thugs, such as the Azorka Boys, took the law into their own hands and abused the human rights of the weak in society, the party lamented.
Mr Atta-Kruffi bemoaned the failure of the Mills Administration to fulfill a single campaign promise, 14 months into government.
He noted that Ghanaians were facing extreme hardship under the NDC government, calling for immediate measures to be put in place to reduce the poverty and pain which had befallen them.
“Ghanaians are enduring all of these hardships because the NDC government has banked its hopes on the oil revenue and is therefore rationing every essential commodity in the country while it buys time,” the party noted.
The UK-Ireland NPP observed that “there are daily shortages of basic and essential commodities such as water, electricity, petrol and the most recent of all, LPG gas. Strangely, the government blames the shortage of LPG on taxi drivers for buying and fuelling their vehicles instead of looking for how to address this harsh and unbearable situation in the country”.
The party was of the hope that Ghanaians had seen through the blatant lies of the NDC even in government and would therefore return the NPP to power come 2012.
