If there is one thing Ghana and Africa need, it is practical, sustainable solutions to tackle pressing development challenges.
The Social Entrepreneurship and Philanthropy (SEaP) initiative at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) Institute of Distance Learning is at the forefront of this movement.
Since its inception in 2016, SEaP has gone beyond theory, pushing students in the MSc. Development Management programme to engage directly with communities and develop low-cost, high-impact projects that align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Looking Back: SEaP 2024 and the Power of Community Solutions
The 7th SEaP Conference in 2024, themed “Inspiring Active Citizenship: The Role of the Development Manager,” showcased remarkable student-led projects, proving that small, determined groups can drive real change.
From vocational training for unemployed youth to equipping community schools with libraries and learning materials, the projects fostered collaboration with local governments, community leaders, and philanthropists to ensure long-term sustainability.

SEaP 2025: Bigger, Bolder, and More Impactful
This year, the 8th SEaP Conference is set to make an even greater impact with the theme “From Idea to Impact: Leading Sustainable Change.”
- 11 student groups will present their community projects to a panel of lecturers and development practitioners.
- Projects span across Ghana - from Tamale to Ada - with one reaching as far as Liberia.
- Topics include health, education, and child protection, reflecting SEaP’s expanding regional and international influence.
- Each group will discuss their achievements, the sustainability of their projects, and the challenges faced.
Why SEaP 2025 Matters Now More Than Ever
The SEaP Conference is more than just an academic exercise - it is a platform for real-world solutions. It brings together students, policymakers, and development professionals to address critical social issues.
With recent challenges in the development sector - including the uncertain future of USAID funding - the conversation on sustainability and locally driven solutions has never been more urgent.
