The Head of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre is calling on the security agencies to target influential people, who have the means of sneaking narcotic drugs into Ghana.

Dr. Kwesi Anin argues that the ordinary person on the street has rather been the target for prosecution by law enforcement agencies while those who spend huge sums of money to bring the drugs are let off the hook.

He described convicts in the prisons as just ordinary people who have fallen prey to such personalities in society and do not have the voice to expose them.

Speaking to drug related issues on Joy News Wednesday evening, Dr. Anin pointed out that the challenge has been that “no one dares report a drug lord; no,” and so the ordinary man becomes the one to suffer for their (influential people) misdeeds.

He said what ought to be done is to embark on a broader societal conversation, which would alert people on the real dangers of abusing drugs.

“Let’s put pictures on television of what drugs do to people before the news; before showing some very good films,” he suggested.

Dr. Anin further expressed worry about the societal acceptability of the trade, indicating, it is destroying society.

“There is certain acceptability about the trade that worries me and I think that is what we need to be talking about.”

Luv FM’s Erastus Asare Donkor reported that even though the recent arrest of some drug barons in two notorious suburbs of Kumasi – Alarbar and Tinka Island, proved successful, there are still signs of flourishing narcotic business in the metropolis.
