A combined team of police and military personnel forcibly seized tents which temporarily provided shelter for victims of a demolition exercise that took place at Adjei Kojo in Tema last week.

The seizure was said to have taken place late Wednesday night while the victims were sleeping.

Joy News TV's Matilda Wemegah, who witnessed the incident, said she had gone to the demolished site to report on how the victims who lost their homes and were now putting up in tents were faring.

From a distance, Miss Wemegah said she and the crew saw uniformed police and military men drive into the area, packed some items into their vehicles and left.

Having been manhandled by security personnel and threatened with death at the site previously, she said her crew could not go close fearing that the worse could happen given that it was dark.

She told Joy News' Jefferson Sackey that she hid in their car but saw security men busy packing items into some seven vans they came in.

After the departure of the security personnel, the victims told Wemegah the men budged into their tents, woke the occupants up, accused them of being stubborn, seized the tents and drove away.

The residents were left with no shelter and their plight worsened. Some of them slept in the open, Wemegah reported.

The residents had their houses razed down early last week after they were described by the TDC as encroachers.

Even though some of the residents claimed to have the valid documents covering the land, officials of the TDC were in no mood to negotiate.

With bulldozers under the supervision of armed police and military personnel, the TDC task force flattened over 150 houses.

While the National Disaster Management Organisation has condemned the action by the TDC and provided some relief items including tents to ameliorate the suffering of the victims, government has given its full backing to the demolition exercise.

Lands and Natural Resources Minister Alhaji Inusah Fuseini said government will no longer tolerate indiscipline in land administration.

Meanwhile, the TDC says it has nothing to do with last night's seizure of tents at Adjei Kojo.
