Eight suspected armed robbers who allegedly snatched two vehicles from their owners in Accra and Kumasi have been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command.
While a Toyota Corolla CE 2010 saloon car with registration number GE 8832-10 was seized from the owner in Kumasi, a Kia Avera taxi with registration number GW 4279 Z was stolen from the owner in Accra.
The suspects are Nana Ofusuhene, a businessman; Kwaku Gyamerah, welder; Isaac Kwaku Ani, a car dealer; Kofi Karikari and Bright Armah.
The others are Samuel Oduro, Samuel Quartey and Emmanuel Antobam.
Briefing the press in Accra Thursday, DCOP Rose Bio Atinga, the Accra Regional Police Commander said the police had information that Nana Ofosuhene was offering a 2010n model of a Toyota saloon car for sale.
She said a team of police detectives approached him and feigned interest to buy the vehicle. Even though the market value of the car is between GH¢ 16,000 and GH¢ 17,000, the suspect offered it for GH¢6,000.
DCOP Bio Atinga said the police initially offered GH¢3,000 with the intention to pay the balance after inspecting the car, but the suspect insisted that they pay the whole amount before he would release the vehicle to them.
She said after bargaining with him for sometime, he was arrested and asked to direct the police to where he was keeping the vehicle.
The suspect led the police to arrest his accomplice; Kwaku Gyamerah, who assisted in arresting his brother-in-law, Kofi Karikari at Tantra HiII, where he was patiently waiting for the money.
According to her, it was Kofi Karikari who led the police to retrieve the car from Kwaku Ani and he was also arrested and when his room was searched three new car number plates and a number of road safety certificates were found.
She said Kwaku Ani told the police that he had already changed the registration number of the vehicle to GW 378-10 with stickers to match and further investigations revealed that he was a pawn man between armed robbers and some staff members of DVLA who usually supplied him with the number plates and documents for stolen vehicles.
With the taxi, DCOP Atinga said on September 19, 2010 the driver in charge of the vehicle was hired by Bright Armah from the Mallam station to Gbawe and on reaching the Presbyterian school park at Gbawe, the suspect asked the driver to stop.
She said unknown to the driver, two of his accomplices, Samuel Oduro and Samuel Quartey, were hiding there and as soon as he stopped they attacked him with machetes and took the taxi away to Domeabra and sold it to Emmanuel Antobam for GH¢600.
The commander said Antobam made a part-payment of Gh¢100.00 and asked them to come for the rest of the money later.
They then defaced the taxi by removing the wheel caps, number plates, road worthy certificate, service light and stickers, leaving only the AMA embossed number.
She said Antobam gave the taxi to one Prince Alokey to work with, around Domeabra, but an informant hinted the police and they were arrested.
