Porters at the Ghana Cocoa Board (Cocobod) warehouse at Tema Community Three (3), who offload cocoa beans from trucks to the warehouse, have embarked on a demonstration against the Board over poor conditions of service.
The dissatisfied cocoa porters, who besieged the premises of Adom FM Tuesday chanting war songs and carrying placards with inscriptions such as “God fight for us”, “wicked CMC” among others, are demanding better salaries and free healthcare.
The porters are demanding an increment in their daily wage from GH¢13 to GH¢20.
The leader of the porters who gave his name as Solomon told Adom News that the workers do not have health insurance cover so if any of them falls sick, the person depends on his meager earning for healthcare.
Solomon said they are therefore demanding health insurance cover for all the porters.
He declared that they would not resume work until their grievances have been addressed by Cocobod adding they had been cheated for far too long.
He appealed to President John Evans Atta-Mills to intervene in the situation because they are suffering.
Solomon also refuted a Daily Graphic publication that claimed that the porters are being paid GHC25 a day, saying that information was false.
