The Concerned Clergy Association of Ghana has called for reform of the Civil Service, blaming the sector for the cause of the nation’s problems.
Spokesperson for the Association, Bishop Benny Wood, says “every problem in Ghana comes from the Civil Service. If we reform and give them performance contract, this nation will be transformed with prayer from the church.”
Bishop Wood was speaking on Joy FM’s Christian talk show, ‘A Walk With Jesus’ Sunday evening.
“If it doesn’t get reformed, we can fast and pray from morning to evening it will not work. It is a demon disturbing this nation,” he observed.
This criticism from the Clergy resonates with views from key personalities in the country.
Former President Jerry John Rawlings once called on the Civil Service to be professional, independent and not susceptible to political influences.
“We may have our political sympathies or allegiances but that should not be allowed to override the logic and integrity of our input into government programmes,” the former President had said a few years ago.
The Service has always been blamed for politicising its activities, sometimes delaying implementation of projects to make administrations they do not support unpopular.
Speaking on the show yesterday, Bishop Wood said beyond a penchant to politicise activities, the Civil Service staff also have a poor attitude to work.
"They come to work late and leave early," he said.
Bishop Wood said the widespread problem of multiple sale of land especially in the capital, Accra would be curbed if Civil Servants at relevant institutions such as the Lands Commission, were proactive.
