The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has indicated that there will be nothing wrong if the county decides to skew development towards Northern Ghana to bridge the years of development gap between the south and the north.
He said there were professors in the 18th century down south, but the first graduate from the north was in 1953.
The Speaker said if the 18th century had a professor and the North had its first graduate in 1953, what that means is that the North needs to work harder to bridge the gap.
”We need to work harder, when they are running, we should be flying. That is what we need," he said.
Mr Bagbin said what the people need in the north now is unity to speed up development. He said people in the area should not let the underdevelopment cause disagreements and conflicts, adding that what the people should be doing is fighting ignorance, poverty and hatred instead of each other.
”Those of you who have 20 children, you know how difficult it is to feed all of them, and so they put the food in one bowl and then they squat around it. I use to squat, we use to be about eight of us around one bowl, and that is where we started learning competition. If you are not fast and your throat is not strong to swallow you will be hungry, so you start learning competition there, and if the food is not sufficient you start fighting among yourselves but none of you is the problem.
"The problem is the one who gave you the food. So don’t let us fight each other. That is not where the problem is, the problem is where the development is coming from, and luckily God has given us the opportunity to develop,” he added.
He said they were prepared to bring the development and urged all to support the cause.
