The Executive Director of policy think tank IMANI Ghana, Franklyn Cudjoe has said transferring CEPS officers caught on camera in the latest rot uncovered at the Tema Ports by Anas Aremeyaw Anas, will not reduce the incidents of corruption there. President Mills during his surprised visit to the Ports last Friday after the exposé stated that, if it becomes necessary to transfer CEPS officers at the Tema Harbour to other places in order to reduce the rate at which money is extorted from importers and businessmen, the government will not hesitate. But Mr. Franklyn Cudjoe stated on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem on Monday that, the people caught on the tape involved in extortion must be prosecuted and not transferred. “I don’t think those caught on camera and those involved in taking bribe would wait to be told to leave. They should be packing out by now”, he said. Mr. Cudjoe said although President Mills demonstrated his determination to fight corruption in the system, he need not have taken the trouble to visit the Ports to prove this. According to him, President Mills does not need to be seen doing the house-cleaning all by himself. The IMANI Boss however believes excessive taxes at the country’s Ports are to blame for the widespread bribery and corruption that has denied the State huge revenues over the years. He said until Government considers a review of “atrocious taxes” imposed on importers, the canker will continue unabated. In a related development, the NDC Member of Parliament for Tain constituency Ibrahim Ahmed says the Ministry of Finance led by Dr. Kwabena Duffuor is ineffective. Mr. Ibrahim Ahmed claims it is the inefficiency of the Finance Ministry that has led to the rot at the Tema Ports.
