The Winneba police has arrested two persons for allegedly stealing electricity cables belonging to the Winneba branch of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). They are Haruna Karimu, 26, and the second person whose name was only given as Yaw, aged 28. A spokesman for the Winneba Police told newsmen on Wednesday that on May 9, Karimu was spotted putting a heavy fertilizer sack into a taxi which later headed towards the Winneba Junction. He said the person also picked a taxi and chased Karimu's taxi to the Winneba Junction and saw him standing near the sack, waiting for transport. The Police said the man raised alarm and with the help of some people, the suspect was apprehended and that a large quantity of electricity cables was found when the bag was opened. After his arrest, Karimu’s room was searched and caters, screw drivers, gloves, testers and six television sets were found. He said Karimu later mentioned Yaw as his accomplice and both claimed ownership of the items found in the room. Mr Isaac Botchway, Winneba Area Manager of ECG, told the GNA in an interview that within the past seven days, 400 yards of copper cables estimated at 3,937.00 Ghana cedis had been stolen from Low Cost, Ghana Highways, Water Works, Sankro, Gyatekrom areas and Community Nurses Training School. Mr Botchway said his outfit had requested for some of the cables from Cape Coast, ECG Regional Headquarters to restore power to the affected areas. He appealed to the public to report suspected persons found around service electrical poles to the Police or the Company in Winneba to help reduce the rampant stealing of electrical cables in the Municipality.
