Volta, Bono, and Bono East regions are emerging as covid-19 hotspots in the country.
The rise in cases within these regions, has been very significant since July.
This is commensurate with sharp rises in cases across the country as Ghana battles a third wave of the virus.
Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye who gave an update on the country's case count at a briefing Wednesday, stated that the Volta Region for instance, which had only 16 cases as of July 1, now has 532 cases.
He mentioned that most of these cases were being recorded in schools and workplaces in the region.
“There has been a very steep rise in the active cases in the last 2 weeks. We have increasing hospitalization and deaths, we’re having some emerging hotspots outside Accra and Kumasi. That is, now we have Volta having new cases, Bono and Bono East also seeing some cases. We also have workplace and school outbreaks taking place.”
He raised concern that the general disregard for Covid-19 safety protocols in the country is significantly contributing to the steep increase in the number of cases and thus, called for strict adherence to the safety protocols.
“We also have seen, as all of you are aware that still, there’s a total disregard to the use of the facemask in the greater population and unfortunately, the delta variant has become the dominant strain as we speak now, especially in Greater Accra Region,” he said.
As of August 1, the Volta, Bono, and Bono East regions have recorded 438, 168, and 138 cases respectively.
Meanwhile, Ghana has recorded 6,276 Covid-19 active cases according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).
In its latest update, GHS said, 86 of these cases are severe while 17 others are in critical condition.
As of July 30, 518 new cases have been reported. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to 105,512.
