The management of Aqua Vitens Rand Limited (AVRL), operators of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), announced on Monday that the Weija Head Works would be shut down completely for 18 hours on Tuesday, July 22 to allow for “East-West Interconnection Line” to be tied into the existing water system of Accra.
The 32 million-dollar project expected to be completed finally by the end of the year involves laying of a 14-kilometre pipe-line between Awoshie and Accra terminal reservoir, the replacement of pumps at Okponglo booster station and construction of a 15 million-gallon per day reservoir.
The statement said the project when completed would improve water supply to parts of Eastern Accra, which covers East Legon, Madina, Adenta, Ashaley-Botwe, Frafraha, Dome, Tantra Hills, Kwabenya, Cantonments, La, Achimota and surrounding areas.
It said the shutdown would leave some areas in Western Accra without water and therefore advised consumers to store enough water for the period.
The management of AVRL and GWCL assured the general public of its commitment to improving the water situation and appealed to all to desist from malpractices such as illegal connections.
