A midwife at Koforidua Zongo Health Centre in Koforidua in the Eastern Region has allegedly turned away a woman in labour for failing to shave her private parts.
Bushira Safinau, 25, was reportedly ordered by the midwife to go home and shave before she can be assisted to deliver at the health centre.
Heavily pregnant and restless with pain, the victim pleaded with the nurse to assist but her plea was rejected.
Unable to bear the discomfort and pain, she decided to go back home but delivered on her way.
The incident has infuriated members of the Zongo community in Koforidua, who describe the midwife’s conduct as unprofessional.
They say the unavailability of a professional hand to assist their pregnant neighbour during the delivery could have caused her death.
They added that the midwife responsible for the insensitive action should not be allowed to go scot-free.
The New Juabeng Municipal Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service says it has opened investigations into allegations.
Municipal Director of Health in New Juabeng, Dr Kwaku Senaya says, the midwife in question has denied the story but an investigation is underway to establish the facts.
