The second annual Corporate Social Responsibility conference has opened in Accra with a call on corporate organizations to be responsive to the problems within the communities they operate.
The conference which is under the auspices of the CSR Foundation is in collaboration with the UN Global Compact Network Ghana.
The theme for this year’s conference is Mainstreaming emerging issues of corporate social responsibility into organizational behaviour in Ghana was chaired by Nana Dr. S.K.B Asante, Former President Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences and Omanhene of Asokore.
Topics to be discussed at the conference include an Overview of CSR Theory and Practice in Ghana, The Role and Responsibilities of Political Parties towards Sustainable Governance and Sustainable Development, Mainstreaming Human Rights Issues into CSR Practice in Ghana, Global Best Practices in CSR and the Ghanaian Experience, Health and Safety as a Core Issue of CSR, Cultural Heritage, Community Relations and Corporate Social Responsibility in Ghana and Mainstreaming Labour Issues in CSR Practice in Ghana.
This year’s conference also aims at having a discussion on ways to encourage peaceful political participation as a concomitant to sustainable development.
Speaking at the opening of the conference on the topic Ways to encourage peaceful political participation as a concomitant to sustainable development, Senior Researcher at the Legon Center for International Affairs and Diplomacy, Dr. Vladimir Antwi-Danso underscored the need for political parties to inculcate their followers on democratic culture, where the rule of law, human rights, constitutionalism is supreme.
This according to him is the sure way for the electorate to make an informed choice irrespective of the political parties they support.
“Sustainable governance is a sine qua non to sustainable development.
Without a governance system that is sustainable, no meaningful development may ensue. Political parties need to educate themselves on the issues of governance and development” he added.
Other speakers at the two day conference include Professor Ken Attafuah, (Director of the William Ofori Atta Institute of Integrity, Central University), Dr. Dan Ofori, (Coordinator, Centre for Corporate Responsibility, University of Ghana Business School), Dr. Ayesha Hakeem (Managing Director, African Connections Ghana) Mr. Kweku Rockson, (Member of the Board of Trustees, CSR Foundation Ghana) Mr. Desmond Appiah, (Executive Director, Sustainable Ghana).
