A total of 45 drivers have been fined GHS25, 710 by the Accra Motor Courts for abusing traffic in the Accra Metropolis. That's according to the police in a statement.

The statement which was signed and issued on the twitter handle of the Ghana police service by the Director-General/Public Affairs, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACOP) David Eklu, said, the exercise conducted by the Central Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (C/MTTU) Special Taskforce is to weed out private vehicles which have been fitted with unauthorised sirens.

The drivers were sanctioned after flouting Legislative Instrument 2180 of the Road Traffic Regulation 74 (2) which states that "a person shall not fit on a motor vehicle warning appliance other than the type approved by the Licensing authority.

"Any person who contravenes the regulation is liable to a fine of not more than 25 penalty units or to a term of imprisonment of not more than 30 days or both."

The statement said offending motorists were arrested for misusing siren and hazard lights to beat traffic with some driving in the opposite direction of the roads, posing danger to other road users.

They were arrested at Airport Aviation, Spintex, Pokuase, Amasaman and Accra Central between January 1-19 this year. the statement added.

The Police expect that the ongoing exercise will sanitise driving on the road.

The police also cautioned all motorists to desist from such negative acts as culprits would be arrested and prosecuted as a deterrent to others.
