There is a new wave of confidence blowing in the camp of Kumasi Asante Kotoko. The Porcupine Warriors will begin their return to continental dominance when they begin their CAF Champions’ League campaign against Equatorial Guinean side Sonny Nguema this Sunday in Kumasi. Kotoko who swept two titles and emerged runners up on five occasions are yet to make an appearance in the competition in the last seven years. Following the rebranding of the competition from the African Club Championships Cup to the CAF Champions’ League in 1997, the Porcupine Warriors are yet to lift a trophy. Spokesperson of the 2012 Ghana Premier League champions, Listowell Buckarson told JOY Sports in an interview that the team is carrying high expectations from their fans and Ghanaians to make a huge impact in restoring their pedigree as one of Africa’s best clubs. “This is the first time we are going to Africa in the last four years so we need to make an impact. In view of that, the team has been really apt in training for this big game. Sonny Nguema can boast of a number of international players, we have received their list of a 27-man delegation. The little that we know about them tells us that it will not be an easy game, we are therefore preparing very hard so we can stand up to the test of time.” Meanwhile the Baba Yara Stadium, which will host the two teams, is currently under intensive renovation, and this comes as a major worry for the smooth organization of the game. This is the first major rehabilitation of the pitch since it was reconstructed ahead of the Ghana 2008 Nations Cup tournament. But spokesperson of the National Sports Authority, Hammah Hamid Issaka is assuring of the availability of the Baba Yara Stadium for Sunday’s champions’ league match. “Everything is perfect. I have spoken with the (Ashanti) Regional Development Officer and he has assured me that everything is in order. The pitch, which was a major problem, has been rectified and is ready to host the two teams on Sunday,” he stated. The Baba Yara Stadium was last used on December 30 in a Ghana Premier League match, which saw King Faisal hosting Asante Kotoko in a week fourteen fixture.
