Two of the leading faces of boxing on both the local and international scene, Lawyer Peter Zwennes Jnr and Manly Spain are touting their credentials ahead of the Ghana Boxing Authority elections slated for March 8th.
Both aspirants go into this election on the back of very impressive CVs having been involved with the sport for many years.
Laywer Zwennes, whose dad Peter Zwennes Snr was also one of the leading faces of the sport says his long association coupled with his drive, passion, ability to deliver and credentials as a man who can turn around the face of the sport puts him in very good stead for the vacant position.
He was particularly delighted that for the very first time in the sport, elections are being held to elect officials for the Ghana Boxing Authority.
“I have been involved in the sport for a very long time from the days when my dad used to take me to the various boxing bouts. Those were the days when unheard of crowds made their way to see bout after bout. For a sport that had a world Champion as far back as 1975 (David Kotei Poison) way before Ghana made it to its first football world Cup, I think the Sport deserves better that is why I am availing myself to serve the Boxing constituency.
In fact the various Stakeholders called on me to consider taking up this mantle since they believe in my ability to transform the sport. All this and more have compelled me to challenge for this position and I believe I will emerge victorious after the elections.”
He added that he intended to broaden the horizon of the sport beyond its base in the Greater Accra Region as the other regions also do have a wealth of potential if they are given the much needed attention and support.
On his part, Manly Spain who doubles up as the promoter of Braimah Kamoko (Bukom Banku) believes the time has come for a new direction for the GBA and he is the right man for the job.
He touted his credentials as one of the best promoters on the boxing scene and added that his connections in the world of boxing and his passion for the sport in the last four decades and more would be enough to get him elected come Election Day.
“I already have a few world title promotions with the big organizations in the sport like WBC, WBA and WBO coming up shortly and Ghanaians should be looking forward to that including one that is planned for Bukom Banku. This is only the beginning and you would see a lot more after March 8th when I assume the presidency.”
Boxing Stakeholders will elect the next President of the GBA on March 8th which will herald a new beginning for the sport after the Sammy Captan led administration was asked to stand down a couple of months ago.
