Police in Central Region are holding a 27-year-old man for defiling a 6-year-old girl at Edumfa, a small farming community.
The suspect, Michael Ayire, according to the little girl, covered her mouth with a cloth to prevent her from shouting.
Joy News Central Region Correspondent, Richard Kojo Nyarko, reports that Michael is a relative of the victim and they both live in the same compound house.
After the 6-year-old and her mother went to lodge a complaint to the police, Michael Ayire’s hideous act reached residents of the small community and they subsequently teamed up and arrested him.
Police have commended the citizens' arrest as brave.
According to the residents, this is not the first time Michael has been alleged to have defiled a child.
District Police Commander for Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese, John Paul Akonde, told Joy News that medical report and the circumstantial evidence in the matter will help their case in court.
”As I speak to you he is in our cells. He is being detained at our place and assisting with investigations. The investigation is almost complete, we have done almost all the things were are supposed to do. He has been cautioned and will be charged on the substantive case, which is defilement.
“[On Monday] we will be wrapping up with all the other things and when we finish he will surely be arraigned before the circuit court in Cape Coast latest by Tuesday,” the Police Commander told Joy News’ Richard Kojo Nyarko.
Under the laws of Ghana a person who commits defilement, consensual or nonconsensual sexual act with any child under sixteen years of age, faces a summary conviction to imprisonment for a term of not less than seven years and not more than twenty-five years.
