The Police has intercepted a cache of ammunition on a Metro Mass bus from Accra to the Nkwanta North District in the Volta Region.
According to Volta Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Doku, submachine gun and three containers of about 2,100 cartridges were seized.
The seizure happened Sunday 5pm as the public bus was heading to Kpassa in the district.
The ammunition was discovered during a random search in the bus with registration number GR 4417-12 at the Nkwanta police barrier.
They [the ammunition] were concealed under a passenger seat and the boot of the vehicles.
DCOP Doku told Daniel Dadzie on Joy News Today, the driver Tony Kwaku Boadu and his conductor Samuel Larbi were arrested and are assisting with investigations.
“When the driver was quizzed, he indicated that someone gave the items to him at the terminal at Tudu in Accra to be handed over to another person at Kpassa,” he stated.
The Police Commander said, “we are holding them for illegal possession of firearms under Section 11 of the Arms and Ammunition act.”
He added the police took the driver and his conductor to court.
DCOP Doku said the court has remanded them but will reappear in for another hearing three weeks.
