The Governor General of Canada, David Johnston has praised Ghana for turning to the courts to settle the 2012 election depute. The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) earlier this year turned to the Supreme Court following concerns over the election results. Mr. Johnston said this shows that Ghana is becoming a reference point for good governance and democracy in Africa and the World. He told Joy News Canada is learning a lot from Ghana. According to him, Canada and Ghana have been “partners in a number of developmental projects going back to pre-independent days and that for us is a great learning experience for us Canadians. It is a matter of pride as we see Ghanaian institutions thrive.” “I think one thing that I will single out is how the rule of law has developed in your country. You have had a democratic change of government several times over now and if there are issues with that they are resolved through the courts system and none otherwise. Those are very important foundations for growth,” David Johnston added.
