The Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Ofosu Asamoah has called for more investment in sports to attract large numbers of the youth to help reduce the rate of crime wave and armed robbery in the country.
He observed that of late most of the armed robbers arrested are youthful and look energetic and athletic, and expressed the hope that if sports was well developed, some of such youth could participate in sporting dsiciplines and stop their nefarious activities.
Mr Asamoah said thses at the closing ceremony of the 21st Ghana Polytechnic Sports Association(GHAPSA) Games at Koforidua at the weekend.
Kumasi Polytechnic topped the medal table they won 10 gold, nine silver and six bronze, Takoradi Polytechnic followed at second position with ten gold, seven silver and seven bronze while Cape Coast Polytechnic placed third with eight gold, eight silver and seven bronze.
Sumaya Alhassan of Tamale Polytechnic who came first the finals of women 100 meters, 200 meters and 400 meters races was judged the best woman athlete of the games.
The best male athlete medal went to Qadir Abdul Latif of Kumasi Polytechnic for winning the men’s 800 meters, 1500 meters and 5000 meters races.
In soccer competition, Sunyani Polytechnic beat Takoradi Polytechnic one nil to lift the soccer trophy with the Golden Boot award going to Francis Frimpong of Sunyani Polytechnic.
In the third place match, Koforidua Polytechnic beat Cape Coast Polytechnic one nil to pick the bronze medal.
Over 1600 athletes from all the ten Polytechnics in the country took part in the one week games.
