The new Prestea-Bogoso-Huni Valley District, which was carved out of Wassa West District, on Friday, February 29, 2008, failed to elect a Presiding Member (PM), shortly after its inauguration at Bogoso.
The 41-member Assembly will therefore reconvene on March 13, 2008 to rerun the election of PM after two contestants failed to win two thirds of the vote cast in two successive balloting.
The contestants were Madam Esther Boampong, a government appointee Assembly Member and Mr Godfred Anokye, Assembly Member for Himan Electoral Area.
In the first round voting, Mr Anokye polled 24 votes while Mad Boampong got 17 votes.
This was followed by a second ballot in which Mr Anokye polled 22 votes as against 18 votes by Mad Boampong with one ballot rejected.
Noticing that none of the contestants polled the required two-thirds of the votes cast, the Wassa West District Electoral Officer, Mr Yaw Opoku, adjourned the session to reconvene for a fresh round of voting.
