The Chief of Staff at the office of Professor J.E.A. Mills, Mr Antwi Boasiako, says he personally wrote and hand delivered a letter applying for a copy of the Voters Register to the Deputy Chairman, Mr. Safo Kantaka. He said after the letter, he held about three meetings with the Deputy Chairman who then directed the Head of Research to grant his request. It is therefore not true that no one has asked for and received a copy of the register from the Electoral Commission as claimed by Mr. Samuel Yorke Aidoo, Acting Head Public Affairs and the Director of Elections, Albert Arhin, both of the EC. Mr. Boasiako was speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show on Wednesday to throw more light on the disputed voters register said to have emanated from the offices of the Electoral Commission. While officials of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, including the flag bearer, Prof J.E.A. Mills, have raised questions over the authenticity and motive of the alleged voters register said to have been bloated and called for a probe, the EC has denied ever issuing out any ‘strange’ figures for the purposes of conducting the 2008 elections. The NDC, and other political bodies, are particularly worried that figures in the disputed register which they insist they received from the EC, show an unbelievably high percentage increases in the number of eligible voters in the Ashanti Region, known to the ‘World Bank’ of the ruling party. The EC is asking the NDC to submit the said copy of the register it claimed to have received from the EC offices, and when asked if the party was ready to grant the request to expedite the investigation process, Mr. Boasiako said the EC cannot elect itself a referee while it is also keenly playing the game and would rather submit to the Inter Party Advisory Committee sub Committee involving the political parties to do the investigation. The EC on Tuesday met with the parties and agree to set up the committee to probe the allegations to ascertain the sources of the alleged discrepancy. He however, said the issue is an urgent one given the nature of the elections and the earlier the EC set up the sub Committee, the better for all and sundry. Story: Ike
