Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketia, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has made nonsense of claims that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, is a 'Zongo boy'.
In a sarcastic tone, Mr Aseidu-Nketia, aka, 'General Mosquito' opined that the claims could never be true and insinuated that his party was better known in the slums of the country.
He made the remarks in Kumasi on Wednesday when he and a number of NDC personalities accompanied the party's flag bearer, Prof. John Evans Atta Mills, on a tour of the Ashanti regional capital.
"Since when did he become a Zongo boy?" he asked teasingly, contending that the NDC was rather the true Zongo party.
He described the NPP as a party full of people who peddled lies to snatch political power from the NDC in 2000, and entreated the electorate to vote back the NDC into political office to ensure what he called 'rapid and effective development of the country'.
General Mosquito contended that only the NDC understood their needs and could therefore meet their aspirations.
The visit, deemed timely by the largest opposition party, was to announce to the Zongo communities in the city that speculation that the Professor was dead, was a hoax, and therefore should be treated with the contempt it deserved.
Also in the company of Prof. Mills were other NDC big shots, including Ofosu Ampofo, National Organiser and Ama Benyiwa Doe, National Women's Organiser.
A few NDC supporters in the city, mostly youth, clad in their red, white, black and green colours, graced the occasion. In unison they sang 'mete ase o mennwu ye o; Onyame n'adorn nti mennwu ye o', meaning 'I am alive by the spirit of God; I am not dead'.
Contributing, Ofosu Ampofo commended Prof. Mills for introducing the much publicized 'Door-to-Door' campaign onto the political scene.
According to him, the party was very delighted to have a competent and loyal person with the calibre of the law professor to be its flag bearer, adding, "The other parties are scared of his 'Door-to Door' tactics, because they know it is highly effective."
He rubbished reports that Prof. Mills 'had visited his ancestors', insisting "your saviour, Mills, is healthy and strong to redeem you from the hardships and poverty which the NPP government has brought to you".
Mr. Ampofo, who seemed content with the sparse crowd of teenagers that at followed Prof. Mills' convoy in the city, declared that the party was poised to win the December election.
"This is an irrevocable declaration, because I have made it based on what I have seen in the two regions", referring to the Eastern and Ashanti regions.
On her part, the National Women's Organiser, Madam Ama Benyiwa Doe, entreated the Zongo communities to vote massively for the NDC in the polls to expedite development of the country, especially in the deprived Zongo communities.
Responding, leadership of the Zongo Community in Kumasi unanimously called on the flag bearer to pick a Muslim as his running mate for the upcoming polls. Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim, Chief of the Wangara Community in Kumasi and Ustaz Kamil, Secretary of the Council of Ulamar and Imams in the region, made the appeal to the professor, saying that it was one way to ensure that they were not left behind in the development of the country.
