The Northern Regional Police Command has expressed concern about the increasing number of traffic violations that have resulted in the death of pedestrians.
The Public Relations Officer of the N/R Inspector Albert Johnson told Joy News that two Nigerien nationals have been run over be a vehicle resulting in one death and the other seriously injured.
Inspector Johnson said in the last two weeks the police arrested three drivers for running over two children and a man in separate incidents.
He pointed out that although stiff punishment exists there is still the need to intensify road safety education for both drivers and pedestrians.
“The people here don’t regard road traffic regulations and the pedestrians to cross the road any how leading to accidents” he stated.
“Some of the drivers don’t have the requisite documents and those who have licenses don’t into cognisance road traffic regulations” he added.
Inspector Johnson expressed regret that some vehicles in the region were not road worthy.
He said although seminars were organised seminars for drivers they ignored all issues discussed at such seminars “and the people do what they want”.
