Mr. Bryan Acheampong, contesting the Suhum constituency New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary mandate for the December general elections says he is hopeful of an outright victory on Tuesday.
A fifth primary has been scheduled for Tuesday after four earlier ones failed to produce a winner between him and incumbent MP, Frederick Opare-Ansah.
While the first two were aborted after discrepancies, the following two ended with both contestants winning 51 votes apiece.
Acheampong told Joy FM’s Araba Koomson that he would win the mandate on Tuesday and does not expect another deadlock.
He said he was reinforcing his message to delegates and was hopeful the availability of all the polling station chairmen would make the difference. He accused the incumbent of camping about 46 polling station chairmen previously and therefore making it impossible for him to reach them. He said their release however, he hopes they would accept his message and vote for him.
“After the first primary last week Wednesday, I think 46 of the polling station chairmen were out of town and one can only assume that my opponent took them out, it wouldn’t just make sense for 46 polling station chairmen to be out of town at the same time and then you go to their houses and you have a single message that they’ve all gone to a funeral but now they are available and I have access to them and I will reinforce my message and it will be well.”
Asked if at the request of the party hierarchy he would step down if Tuesday’s ballot goes the way of the last two, Acheampong said the party’s constitution does not permit its leaders to meddle in due process and he would therefore not expect them to seek compromises. In any case, he said another draw is unlikely.
