The Commanding officer of the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Unit ACP Victor Tandoh has declared that personnel of the unit are poised to ensure safety on the roads during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the country. He said that about 60 dispatch riders, including a number of females, were undergoing intensive training both in theory and practice at the Police Training School in Accra on effective dispatch riding. He said the personnel were trained to beef up the number of dispatch riders to150 to enable them to perform efficient official duties during the Jubilee anniversary celebrations. "The IGP and the Police administration have put in place a training package for the personnel to be trained to the required standard". He said that apart from the dispatch riders, a number of police officers and men are undergoing a series of training with regard to their mental alertness and courtesy to the public and the dignitaries. He noted that some personnel of the service will be put at vantage points or place to manage and control traffic throughout the celebration to ease traffic. Mr. Tandoh has therefore appealed to the public especially drivers and other road users to cooperate with the security agencies for the successful celebration of the event He said roads leading to the ceremonial grounds of the independence square will be closed to traffic except those who have official invitation cards. The roads are from the ministries traffic light through the Customs, Excise and Preventive Service traffic light to the independence square as well as all roads within the ministries. He also mentioned that the road linking the Liberation traffic light to the Osu cemetery will be closed to traffic and urged all road users to adhere to all the divisional signs when the time is due." Mr Tandoh assured the public that effective control measures will be put in place at the Trasacco valley where some of the dignitaries will be lodging. He said that the management of the Trasacco Estate Company Limited has been advised to put warning signs from a farer distance of about 2 kilometres to control vehicles coming from the Tema direction. He allayed the fear of a section of the public that the creation of the route from the Trasacco Valley to join the Accra-Tema motorway will cause accidents. Mr. Tandoh also entreated pedestrians to use footbridges and pedestrian crossing saying that with the passage of the road safety act, pedestrians who failed to use such ways will be arrested and prosecuted.
