Ejura-Sekyedumase, the largest maize producing district in Ashanti has seen a lot of social and economic development projects in recent times. This has come about as a result of co-operation among the people and the mutual understanding and unity of purpose between the District Chief Executive(DCE) the technocrats, organizations and other stakeholders especially the assembly members Dr Joshua Ayarkwa, the DCE of the area told newsmen at Ejura on Friday that the wave of development had seen over 53 billion cedis been injected into its execution, which were started in 2001. The projects covers the entire the district communities, includes over 31 three-unit primary school classroom blocks with toilet facilities, libraries and teachers quarters. These projects, he said were sponsored with assistance from the USAID Quality Improvement for Primary Schools (QUIPS), HIPC funds, Ghana Education Trust Fund and Promoting Partnership with Traditional Authorities Project (PPTAP). On Water and Sanitation, Dr.Joshua Ayarkwa pointed out that over 61 boreholes have been sunk since 2003 for the various communities in the district, in addition to the rehabilitation and expansion of the water system at Sekyedumase. The water project was sponsored by the International Development Agency (IDA), the German bank for Reconstruction (Kfw) with the District Assembly funding 10 per cent of every project. On Sanitation the DCE said 15 sanitary facilities have been provided, nine Acqua Privy Toilets at Frante, Juaho Bonyon, Aframso, Dromankoma, Nokwareasa, Hiawoanwu and Ejura. The District has also provided a cesspit emptier, a tractor and a Skip Loader for the Ejura Township, which is the district capital. The Assembly is supporting development projects such as yam stalls, market stalls/stores and butchers' shop as well as the fencing of a new market. Also completed at Ejura is a new market complex built at Sekyedumase and Anyinasu, all to boost the Internally Generated Funds of the Assembly. Efforts to provide a good road network in the district on going with the road from Ejura to Dome, which was in a deplorable state had been reshaped, whiles the regravelling of the street from Aframso to Nkoranza was progressing steadily. The DCE pointed out that many other roads were either completed or under reconstruction to facilitate the carting of foodstuff and other commodities to market centres. Dr Ayarkwa however called for the expedition of the construction of the Anyinam-Sekyedumase road. On the health situation in the district, the DCE said a lot has been done in that sector and that a staff quarters have been completed for the Anyinasu Health Centre and that of Ejura. He said the rehabilitation works on a three-bedroom accommodation for the Sekyedumase health Centre have also been completed. He said other projects being undertaken to accelerate development of the district included, the construction of culverts, resettlement scheme for flood prone areas, purchase of refuse containers, computers, motorbikes and the construction of six-bedroom for the DCE. Others are the construction of a community resource centre at Sekyedumase and Ejura, provision of Intercommunication facility at the district administration and construction of a maternity ward at Ejura Health Centre. The DCE said the Assembly last year introduced a sponsorship package of 400 million cedis in support of education in the district to improve standards in the district. GNA
