Two school children were killed, whilst another has been seriously injured, on the newly constructed Awoshie - Pokuase road in two separate accidents last Tuesday evening.
According to an eyewitness, the children had closed from school and were crossing the road when they were hit and killed by the speeding driver.
One of the deceased was later identified as Gloria Arhin 13, but the other, about seven years old, was yet to be identified at the time of filing this report.
The third victim, currently at the hospital, was also identified as Elinam Avorgah, 11 years. The first two victims died on the spot whilst the injured was rushed to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for medical attention.
The vehicles involved in the accidents were an Urvan commercial bus with registration number GW 1202-09 and a hit-and-run 4x4 unregistered vehicle.
The death of the children caused pandemonium in the area, with some of the residents blocking some parts of the main road to prevent vehicles from using it.
It took the intervention of some police personnel from the Kaneshie Divisional Police Command to bring the situation under control.
Efforts to make the driver stop after killing the children proved futile. Some drivers reportedly attempted to chase and arrest him but this did not yield any results either.
A few hours later, 11-year-old Elinam Avorgah who was also crossing the road from school, was knocked down by a commercial vehicle at the same spot.
The commercial vehicle, with registration number GW1202-09 and driven by one Stephen Anyan, was coming from the Abeka-Lapaz area and was heading towards Anyea Market.
The driver, an eyewitness said, was immediately arrested and handed over to the Anyea Police.
When the Kaneshie Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Ernest Owusu, was contacted he confirmed the incidents.
He said that the driver in the second accident was in detention and was assisting in police investigations.
According to him, efforts are being made by the police to apprehend the hit-and-run driver who was driving the unregistered 4×4 vehicle.
