A ceiling of three presidential candidates has been proposed for consideration by delegates of the New Patriotic Party. This was disclosed by the party’s General Secretary, Nana Ohene Ntow in an interview with Joy News’ Dzifa Bampoe on Monday.According to Nana Ntow, this new proposal is one of 60 others presented by stake holders to the party’s National Executives Council to be deliberated on and a final decision taken when the party holds its delegates conference later this month. The party came under scathing attacks when 17 candidates campaigned in the party’s primaries for the slot of the presidential candidate in the run up to the December 2008 general elections.Critics attribute the party's defeat in the elections to disunity and profligate spending both of which characterized the hotly contested primaries which elected Nana Akufo-Addo as the party’s flag bearer.Nana Ohene Ntow was hopeful the ‘wholesale’ jostling for the party’s flag bearer will be a thing of the past.He said there will be a two-step process in which all interested candidates will be accepted but which will be pruned down to three or five by the party’s National Executive Council, guided by set criteria. But Mr. Ntow said that these proposals will have to be approved at the party’s conference. He also disclosed the possible enlargement of the party’s electoral college at all decision-making levels of the party. He stressed that there are several permutations for the enlargement process which will also be considered and decided at the conference.
