A team of police personnel and officials of the Food and Drugs Board (FDB) Monday seized large quantities of unregistered drugs on sale at the Okaishie market in Accra.
The drugs, mostly aphrodisiac, according to officials of FDB, are used for sexual enhancement in both sexes, including enlargement of the penis, hips and breasts and are in the form of creams, soaps and tablets.
Briefing the media, the head of Post Market Surveillance Unit of the FDB, Eugene Addo, said FDB was particularly worried, about the rate at which unregistered drugs were entering the country, contending that "it is making it difficult for the board to ascertain their quality, safety, efficacy and source.
"Their efficacy cannot be established because they are not registered; this is because every drug registered with the FDB undergoes thorough laboratory examination to establish its quality, efficacy and safety to consumers."
He said it was possible that some of the drugs had expired and could pose a health hazard to consumers.
Some drugs have Chinese and Indian inscriptions on them making it difficult to determine their efficacy.
The exercise, he said, was to clear fake goods from the system to discourage would be drug importers.
Mr Addo warned that traders who ran away at the sight of the police would be arrested and prosecuted when they came forward to claim their goods.
Two of the traders, Ms Felicia Sosu and Mr Alex Adjei, whose goods were seized, told the Times that they bought their drugs from traders who imported them from Togo and Nigeria.
