The police in Accra have started screening suspects arrested during a recent swoop.
The people numbering 80 are suspected of various crimes including armed robbery, car-snatching and money counterfeiting.
Police on Friday raided their hideouts in Achimota, Abeka Lapaz, Fadama, the Kwame Nkrumah Circle and New Aplaku in an operation code-named “Operation Dragnet.”
Several items including bundles of fake currency notes, large quantities of Indian hemp, a number of electronic gadgets and military uniforms were retrieved in the operation.
The Director-General of Police Operations, DCOP John Kudalor, whose unit conducted the raid, said those found culpable of any offense would be prosecuted.
He however hinted that the service had designed a series of test programmes that would ensure that persons who are truly innocent are released.
The swoop is one of several ones conducted by the police service to rid the capital city of criminals.
Earlier exercises have largely centred around the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, described by the service as the hideout of prostitutes and hardened criminals.
The operation is thought to be part of efforts to make true President Mills' promise to clamp down on criminal activities in the country.
The president at his investiture promised to reduce armed robbery and restore confidence in the Police Service.
With the appointment of a new police boss who has promised, a "world-class police service", expectations of Ghanaians are that the increasing wave of armed robbery and other crimes in the society would end.
