Doctors across the country have resumed their normal work schedule after what they say was fruitful salary negotiations with government. Last week the doctors decided to, like civil servants, work from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. daily. The move was to pressure government to return to the negotiation table following stalled salary negotiations. The doctors demanded a 50 per cent pay rise arguing they had not had any salary increases for the last three years. But government offered a meagre six per cent. Executive of the Ghana Medical Association Tuesday met with the Health Minister, Dr Sipa Yankey and after discussions the doctors softened their stand. The president of the association, Dr. Adum Winful, told Joy News the aggrieved doctors unanimously agreed to call off the work-to-rule action. “We’ve all agreed that we should now revive the negotiation process and we’ve had our salaries reviewed,” he said. According to him, a committee was being set up to take a holistic look at conditions of service for doctors. Dr Sipa Yankey confirmed some consensus had been reached with the doctors but would not give details as to the percentage of salary increase the government agreed to give to the doctors.
