The Minister of Women and Children’s Affairs, Akua Sena Dansua has described as unnecessary and politically motivated a petition sent to the president John Evans Atta Mills by some women groups. The women numbering about four were led by the National Coordinator of Women in Law and Development in Africa (WILDAF), Ms Bernice Sam, on Thursday petitioned the president, demanding the fulfillment of the campaign promise to appoint 40 per cent of women into government and other public institutions before 2012. They also demanded the implementation of a policy that will reserve 30 per cent quota to women in the impending district assembly election. The petition was received on behalf of the president by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Dr. Valerie Sackey, together with other women ministers including Dr. Hanna Bissew, Deputy Works and Housing Minister, Attorney General, Mrs. Betty Mould Iddrissu. Shortly after receiving the petition the Women Minister in an interview with Citi News intimated the petition was unnecessary since her ministry was already addressing many of the demands made by the women. She maintained the petitioners would not have embarked on a demonstration if they had consulted the ministry for clarification. The minister asserted a data base has been developed to provide information on all competent women in the country which will guide the president in making future appointment, adding the government is committed to building the capacity for women in the next district assembly election.
