A Human Rights court in Accra has declared the withdrawal of nearly 700 students of the Methodist University College Ghana (MUCG) as unconstitutional and directed that they are reinstated.

The students were sacked in 2012 by the University after they were deemed not to have met the minimum admission requirements. The Christian-based university college maintained that it was complying with the directive of the National Accreditation Board (NAB).

But the judge ruled that the students had a right to unimpeded education and had already begun their courses of study after paying school fees. Some of the students had completed their programmes before they were withdrawn from the private university.

The university has been holding on to their results. But with the latest ruling, the students can now go in for their certificates.

The court awarded costs of GHC10,000 against each defendant institution - MUCG and the National Accreditation Board.

The university authorities were not in court at the time of the ruling.
