The AUCC chapter of the Journalists for Human Rights has urged security agencies not to use violent means in dealing with people who will flout lockdown measures in Accra and Kumasi.

Greater Accra, Ashanti and parts of the Central region will be on a partial lockdown for two weeks beginning Monday, March 30.

The move announced by President Akufo-Addo last Friday is to curb the spread of coronavirus as cases in the country continue to increase.

Btu with the police, military and other security agencies set to be deployed on the streets to enforce the measure, the group says it has noted with concern the growing panic and fear among a section of the public.

“We will crave the indulgence of our revered security operatives to act professionally and not subject civilians to needless brutalities but manage people in a manner that will consolidate the hard-won peace and stability being enjoyed in the country. 

“In the face of the prevailing situation, we further wish to caution the general public particularly, residents in Accra, Tema and Kumasi to allay fears and go strictly by the president’s directive to enable the police and the military have a violent free operation.”
