The Presidential Advisor on Health, Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, says the President’s decision to lift the lockdown was not merely based on medical science, but on social science as well.
Speaking on the Joy News' PM Express, he said, President Nana Akufo-Addo had to take into consideration the impact of the novel coronavirus on social and economic life in the country.
“...they are economics so they’re all science, it's not health science. Because this disease is not only about health; it’s about health, it’s about the social life of the person, it’s about the economic wellbeing of the person, it’s about even food and agriculture,” he said on Tuesday evening.
It is estimated that about 90% of Ghana’s population operate within the informal sector of the national economy.
The informal sector was the hardest hit by the three-week lockdown in the country.
The former Director of the Ghana Health Service said the ease of restriction on movement was in order to allow people within the informal sector fend for themselves as the country continues to battle the pandemic.
Dr Nsiah-Asare, however, cautioned that Ghanaians continue to observe sanitary procedures and social distancing as a preventive measure against being infected with the virus.
