The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has approved the use of some two Covid-19 vaccines procured by the government in its fight against the pandemic.

In its latest report, the FDA indicated that after several reviews, both the Sputnik V vaccine and Covishield have been confirmed "efficacious, safe and of good quality" for use.

"The Covid-19 vaccine authorized in Ghana will be as effective as any vaccine authorized by other countries," the Authority stated.

This comes after several claims that some vaccines procured by the government to treat the coronavirus are not safe for human consumption and pose severe negative effects after use.

In response to this, the Food and Drugs Authority disclosed that the vaccines are highly regulated and undergo different phases of clinical trials. In addition, well-studied platforms such as the adenovirus vector platform for its development.

Giving assurance on the safety of the vaccines procured, the FDA stated that vaccines are 60-94 per cent effective and aid in preventing symptomatic disease.

"The World Health Organization guidance is that Covid-19 vaccines should demonstrate at least 50% efficacy against severe disease."

In addition, the FDA, a WHO Maturity Level 3 regulatory agency noted that the vaccines are effective for at least a year.

The country on Wednesday, received 600,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccines to aid in the fight against the virus.

Meanwhile, the Food and Drugs Authority is insistent that the vaccination programme is a priority in the fight to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

"Vaccines are an important part of stopping the spread of Covid-19 in Ghana. This is because they offer protection to an individual, by reducing their risk of infection or the severity of their symptoms," the Authority added.
