The Ashiaman MP, Ernest Norgbey, says the Economic Intelligence Unit (EIU) made a mistake when it projected the 2024 victory of the NDC being largely dependent on a new face as the flagbearer of the party.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Kwesi Parker-Wilson, he said although EIU is credible he believes the NDC can win the next election without changing who its flagbearer is.

“I trust their (EIU) judgement but on this particular one, they erred. We are going to win the 2024 election with John Dramani Mahama and we are also going to win a majority in Parliament.”

"So in as much as I believe in their (EIU) predictions that we are going to win power in 2024 massively and even win the majority in parliament, I cannot understand their methodology for saying that we can only win if we introduce a new face."

Mr Norgbey said that the two-time flagbearer of the NDC has a long political history, he has also been marketed to the people and relates to them, thus, he stands a better chance of winning the elections.

He stated that although corruption accusations were levelled against him, it is evidently clear that many Ghanaians have seen there was no evidence to the claims.

Thus, in comparing the John Mahama administration to the governing NPP, he believes Ghanaians are more open to the former flagbearer adding “this one is becoming something that Ghanaians are worried about.”

His comment comes after the EIU released a 25-page report which suggested the NDC stands a chance of winning the 2024 elections with a new candidate.

“The next parliamentary and presidential elections are due in 2024. Under the constitutionally mandated term limits, Mr. Akufo-Addo cannot run for a third term. Mr. Mahama is reportedly considering whether to run again, but we expect the NDC to seek to revitalize its prospects with a fresh candidate,” part of the report read.

However, Mr Norgbey said that a new candidate cannot compete with an existing government adding that John Mahama still has the capacity and capability to win the election.

"We need to ride on the shoulders of John Mahama who has been in the system for a very long time," he said.

Meanwhile, the Information Minister, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has also downplayed projections made by the EIU on their expectation that the opposition NDC will win the 2024 polls.

According to him, government is rather bent on bettering the lives of Ghanaians between now and 2024 so much so that Ghanaians will retain the ruling party in the 2024 polls.

Speaking at a press conference in Accra on Sunday, the Minister noted that the report only serves as a “guiding notes” and must be treated as such.
