The Deputy Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Dr Eric Bossman Asare, has blamed abuse of the law that allows aggrieved parties to request a recount of the ballots for their inability to announce the results of the elections within 24 hours as promised.
Ahead of the 2020 polls, the Commission indicated that considering the mechanisms it had put in place, it would be possible to declare the results within 24 hours.
However, it was unable to do so.
Speaking on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, Dr Bossman Asare explained that their inability to declare the results as promised was due to the abuse of the recount of the ballot.
“That process was abused because one party can ask for a recount, something that has been done perhaps two or three times. Then the other person will say that ‘since you have done that, then I will also do the same.
“So as we move forward, we must relook at the laws. Which is being regulated by the C.I (Constitution Instrument),” he said.
He also revealed that the EC had begun amending the Constitutional Instrument to allow residents of Santrokofi Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) vote in the next elections.
He dismissed suggestions that the iniability of the people of SALL to vote was a ploy on their part to manipulate the Parliamentary Elections.
“The EC did not have any hand in it. The EC can never do that. Why would we want to disenfranchise people?
“The EC has begun the process and we are working on it. So we want to use this medium to assure the people of that area that, the EC is doing what is proper and necessary to ensure that they are also fairly represented in Parliament,” he stated.
