Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo has called for stricter limits on the types of cases that can proceed to the Supreme Court, arguing that unnecessary interlocutory appeals are contributing to delays in Ghana’s justice system.

She said some matters are being taken to the apex court on issues arising during proceedings, even when the main cases have yet to be determined by the High Court.

According to her, this practice adds to the Supreme Court's workload and prolongs case resolution.

“Sometimes there are also some matters which come to the Supreme Court only on what is called an interlocutory appeal, which is so unnecessary and shouldn’t have come to the Supreme Court because the case itself might still be in the High Court,” she said.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Sophia Akuffo explained that some of these appeals could remain before the Supreme Court for years, delaying the conclusion of the substantive cases.

She therefore advocated for more cases to end at the Court of Appeal, particularly where they do not involve new legal questions or significant constitutional matters.

“A lot of other matters should end in the Court of Appeal if they don’t raise new issues or very sensitive constitutional issues,” she said.
