The Builsa South MP says the issue of salaries to the spouses of the President and Vice President will not halt at their decision to refund the monies received so far.
Dr Clement Apaak, together with the South Dayi MP, Rockson Nelson Dafeamekpor, and Frederick Nii Commey, is seeking eight reliefs from the Supreme Court, including the salaries to the spouses.
“For us, we still insist that whether they have received and returned, the ones they received without any arguments, for us the matter before the court will not be withdrawn,” he said.
His comment comes after a July 13 letter addressed to the Chief of Staff, signed by Shirley Laryea of the Office of the First Lady, confirmed that she has been “directed to forward, herewith, a consolidated Bank Ghana Limited cheque number 000002 for an amount of ¢899,097.84, being the full refund for monies received from January 7, 2017, to date, as allowances given to the First Lady.”
A similar statement from the wife of the Vice President, Samira Bawumia, also stated that she will “not accept any monies allocated to her, pursuant to the recommendations of the Prof Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu led Committee, as approved by Parliament.”
This comes after series of concerns raised by Ghanaians, but the plaintiffs who sued the Attorney General over the issue maintains “the court must give a verdict” despite the decision by the beneficiaries.
“What they have done is out of their will," Dr Apaak said.
“If out of their own will, [for instance] Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings through to Theresa Kuffour, Lordina Mahama and then Rebecca Akufo-Addo say they are refunding what they received to Ghanaians, so be it. No one is arguing about that.”
The Builsa South MP said they want to understand “what influenced the decision to pay the first and second lady salaries under Article 71.”
“If the matter is withdrawn from the court leaving the recommendations, and later it is revealed that it was effected, and payments were made behind closed doors, what would we then do,” he quizzed.
“So once the matter is in court, whether we like it or not, Ghanaians are awaiting the outcome from the court,” he said.
Meanwhile, the NDC MPs are not the only ones demanding clarification as the NPP’s Bono Regional Chairman, Kwame Baffoe Abronye, popularly known as Abronye DC, has also filed a court action over the issue.
