Head of the opposition National Democratic Congress's (NDC) International Relations Directorate has revealed that government has awarded at least 11 contracts to an architectural and design firm, Adjaye Associates.
According to Alex Segbefia, although he can’t confirm the exact number of contracts, the connection of the architectural firm, owned by Sir David Adjaye, to most projects under the Akufo-Addo government is questionable.
He, therefore, insisted that the issue must not be “left to hang” but should be interrogated to uncover if government abides by the procurement processes as stated in the constitution.
Listing the projects that allegedly have been awarded to Adjaye Associates, Mr Segbefia indicated;
- Trade Fair Company [renovation]
- Efua Sunderland Children's Park
- The Parliamentary new chamber
- Marine Drive Project
- Oil City in Takoradi
- GNPC office in Takoradi
- Bank of Ghana office
- Airport city project
- Railway terminal
- Ghana Embassy in the US
- Agenda 111
Meanwhile, the Ghana Institute of Architects has raised concerns over Adjaye Associates winning designing contracts.
After the government awarded the construction of the 111 Health Facilities across the country to the company, the Honorary Secretary of the Ghana Institute of Architects, Augustus Richardson accused government of flaunting laid down procedures.
In view of this, Mr Segbegfia tasked government to clarify which of the aforementioned contracts are true or otherwise.
Whilst admitting that the renowned architect is good at his job, the former Health Minister said it is fair if all architects in the country are given fair opportunities in upcoming projects.
“In order for this smell to go away, they [government] should come and clarify which ones are untrue and even if it is true, they should tell us the procurement process they went through, especially on Agenda 111 to put our minds at rest," he said.
