The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) has revealed that more than 3,000 persons have been displaced after tidal waves swept through their homes in the Ada East and West districts of the Greater Accra Region on Sunday.
Per reports received by NADMO, the disaster also destroyed more about 251 households in four communities, including Lolonya, Agblabanya and Anyamam.
Speaking in an interview on Prime Morning, Wednesday, the Communications Director of NADMO, George Ayisi, said the degree of damage caused by the waves was “very bad.”
According to him, although some victims have been given temporary shelter, the residents of these affected towns must consider relocating or a sea defence walls must be immediately constructed to salvage the situation.
“Per initial reports that we had, we were told that Agblabanya was nearly split into two…the proximity of the people’s residence to the coastline is also something that is a bit worrying and it’s understandable [because] they involved in salt mining and fishing.
“So, two things; either they relocate or we get a sea defence wall for them. About 251 households were hit. I have 3,016 people [but for the homes], 251; that’s what our report has. It cuts across the four communities,” he told Prime Morning Host, Emefa Adeti.
“From NADMO, we got some temporary [place at Anyamam], the local council area as safe haven for those that cannot be in their homes and I understand some school complex has been gotten for some people and others are integrating with families in safer places.
“For those who can get back to their homes, we understand the water is receding gradually. So when it does, they will be able to go back to their homes and build better,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Sege Member of Parliament, Christian Corleytey Otuteye, has criticised the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) for not providing enough relief items to persons affected by the recent tidal wave in the Ada West and East constituencies.
He says the mattresses and food items that have so far been distributed are inadequate to cater for the households that were severely hit by the disaster.
“Come to what support they have given to the people; so funny to hear that they brought one of the communities that suffered severe tidal wave effect 17 mattresses as of today, for so many homes.
“Rice – 30kg, 10 bags; students mattresses, 15; Frytol, three boxes; soap, three boxes; that is from the Assembly member who also doubles as the Presiding Member of the Assembly,” he stated.
