A teacher, Emmanuel Afful, has bemoaned the poor state of the School Feeding Programme.  

According to him, it is very disappointing for school kids to be starved in their bid to get an education.

“I never anticipated a situation where a child of 13, 14, 15,16 years cannot eat because he decided to go to school,” he said.

He was speaking on the Super Morning Show, on Thursday, July 14, following complaints about the school feeding programme.

The policy has recently come under heavy criticism over some discrepancies associated with it.

Beneficiaries of the policy have lamented the poor quality of food being served under the programme.

Recently, caterers embarked on a strike to demand an increase in their feeding grant from 0.97 pesewas to 3 cedis.

According to them the 97 pesewas allocated for the feeding per child is woefully inadequate.

In the wake of the growing concerns, the teacher who is baffled about the situation questioned why parents and other relevant stakeholders are not allowed to make inputs that would improve the policy.

“Why aren’t we not allowing parents and school management committees who are ready to help in this regard to do so? I think we should we school bow our heads down in shame,” he said.

Mr Afful believes one of the ways of improving the policy and ensuring its sustainability is by involving relevant stakeholders to make input on how to improve the programme.

"Let's bring people together, we have headmasters that have great ideas," he stressed.

He further called for a decentralised system to be run under the programme where every school is made to control its operations, in terms of dealing with their suppliers of food commodities.
