The three teacher unions who embarked on an industrial action are expected to resume their roles today.
The Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and the Coalition of Concerned Teachers (CCT), on Friday, November 4, 2022, declared a nationwide strike over the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as the Director-General (D-G) of the Ghana Education Service (GES).
However, the National Labour Commission (NLC) managed to secure a restraining order against the teacher Unions from continuing with their strike.
But as they return, the teachers have warned that they would not hesitate to lay down their tools should government refuse to heed their concerns over the newly appointed GES boss.
Speaking to JoyNews, NAGRAT’s General Secretary, Ayura-Boya said the teacher unions and government will engage and come out with a resolution.
“We are beginning work today with the understanding that the Ministry and the teacher unions will sit and agree on the issues that we have problems with and revert to the Labour Commission on Wednesday.
“In the unlikely event that we do not agree and the Labour Commission doesn’t resolve the matter in a way that we think it should be, we will go back to our strike,” he stated.
Last week, Ghana's education sector came to a standstill as teachers in public kindergarten, primary, JHS, SHS, and university were all on strike for various reasons.
