A private legal practitioner, Bobby Banson says Ghanaians have lost the opportunity to see the final decision of President Akufo-Addo on his embattled Finance Minister.
According to him, if the Minority in Parliament were successful with its censure motion against Ken Ofori-Atta, the President would have been caught between a rock and a hard place.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Mr Banson claimed that the Majority Caucus lacked the courage to demand that the Finance Minister’s position be revoked.
“That is why I say that yesterday was a missed opportunity. If the majority of the members of parliament had voted, and the President decides not to sack him, then we would have the situation where the president is directly going against the wishes of the people."
He said that despite public displeasure with the Minister's handling of the state's treasury, he was confident that the President had no plans to remove Mr. Ofori-Atta from his position anytime.
For this reason Mr. Banson argued that if the censure motion had sailed through on Thursday, a clearer signal would have been sent to the public that the President was not ready to listen to the demands of the citizens.
The Parliamentary Minority's attempt to have Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta removed from office failed because it lacked the necessary number of votes to effect the censure.
A parliamentary session took place on Thursday, December 6, to vote on the censure motion filed against the Finance Minister and to approve the resolution against Mr. Ofori-Atta, the motion's supporters required the support of 183 lawmakers.
However, on Thursday, only 136 lawmakers from the minority side voted to demand the resignation of Mr. Ofori-Atta, falling short of the two-thirds constitutional threshold needed for the resolution to pass.
