The Volta Regional President of the Ghana Institute of Surveyors, Maxwell Lukutor, has stated that some citizens are delighted by corruption or corrupt politicians.
Speaking on JoyNews' AM show, the Regional President indicated that the attitude of a majority of Ghanaians rather depict love for corruption, adding that some youth quickly jump in defense of corrupt politicians.
"If you look at the attitude of most Ghanaians towards corruption and politicians, you'd want to think that some, I can't put a percentage to it though but some are still in love with corruption. Some are in love with corrupt politicians because the youth especially, once you talk about corruption, somebody will jump in and compare two years ago or five or six years ago. I think our corruption six years ago was bad and corruption a year ago or now should also be bad."
He said those who take a strong stance against corruption should be the people to be placed in leadership.
Mr. Lukutor was comparing some leaders of Nigeria such as Ex-President Obasanjo Olusegun and Peter Obi who is running for President to leaders in Ghana.
Recent development reveal that the former President has endorsed Peter Obi ahead of Nigeria's Presidential Election.
Mr. Olusegun is known for his forthrightness and strong stance against corruption during his tenure as President.
According to Mr. Lukutor, he is the kind of leader Ghana needs especially in this regime where corruption is widespread in the country.
The fight against corruption in Ghana has become quite tough. The fight led to the resignation of the former Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, who had revealed that the interference of government officials in his work had breached his outfit's independence.
Current Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, who was appointed to replace Martin Amidu in 2021 has also recently lamented the lack of a collective front in the fight against corruption. He said, the country is not ready to fight the menace.
Meanwhile, reports reveal that Ghana loses billions of cedis to corruption annually.
About GH¢5 billion is said to have been lost in payment of bribes to state officials in 2021 according to the Ghana Integrity of Public Services Survey (GIPSS).
It is also reported that more than 17.4 million cedis in bribe was paid in the same year.
